Private Chef Placement
The two titles get used as if they mean the same job. They do not, and the difference decides whether the hire actually solves the problem your household has.
A private chef is exclusive household staff, inside the residence, accountable to the principal or the estate office. A personal chef is a scheduled cook who serves several clients and usually leaves finished food behind. This page is written by a private chef specialist for families, estate managers, and family offices deciding which arrangement the house actually needs, not for chefs shopping a role.
Quick Answer
A private chef works full-time for one household only. A personal chef works across several clients on a set schedule. If your family needs daily meals, discretion, and someone who runs the kitchen as staff, you need a private chef placement. If you need occasional cooking or meal prep, a personal chef is usually enough.

Private chef: the day's cooking moves with the household. Personal chef: you get the hours booked, and only those.
Private chef: one employer, one NDA, one reference chain. Personal chef: several kitchens, several conversations.
A private chef can hold the same programme across New York, London, Los Angeles, Miami, Monaco, and the wider Mediterranean, and some households need a traveling private chef as part of the same search. See all the markets we serve.
A personal chef is a service fee plus groceries. A private chef is a full-time compensation package plus the household's food budget. See the private chef compensation calculator.
Search results for these terms are noisy, and most platforms do not help. A "personal chef" listing on a booking app can be a dinner-party cook. A "private chef" listing from a generalist staffing site can be a live-out contractor who batches meals twice a week. Very few of them are built as a genuine private chef agency; most simply sell whichever booking converts. For a UHNW house, the two questions that actually settle it are: who else does this person cook for, and how often are they in the residence?
Residence, live-in versus live-out, is a separate decision from this one, and it comes after you have already settled which of these two roles you are hiring for.
A private chef is employed or contracted for one family. The kitchen is their workplace. The household's calendar is their calendar.
Menus, provisioning, vendors, and guest lists stay inside that house. There is no other client's fridge, no other family's allergies. Discretion is operational, not a slogan: NDAs and reference checks sit on the same file as the rest of the household staff.
Breakfast for the family, lunch around school or office hours, dinner that moves an hour because a guest landed late. That is a programme, and it cannot be batch-cooked on a Tuesday and left in labelled containers for the week.
A private chef sits with the estate manager on the same rhythm as the rest of the indoor team. Family offices come to us for exactly this layer of hire, because a generalist search treats the chef like a caterer. See private chef placement for family offices.
A personal chef typically cooks for several households. They visit on a rota, shop or work from a drop-off list, cook a set of meals, pack them, and leave. That model is real, and for the right household it is genuinely useful. It is also a different product from what most UHNW families think they are buying.
Their Thursday in your kitchen is one slot among several. If a principal's travel changes on Wednesday night, the chef may already be committed elsewhere.
The food can be excellent, still produced in a block. That works well for a couple who eat out four nights a week. It becomes fragile the moment the house has children, staff meals, or guests who arrive without notice.
A city pied-à-terre used ten nights a month. A new house still interviewing for full-time staff. In those cases a personal chef is the right hire, contracted as exactly that.
Search results for these terms are noisy. Dinner-party apps, catering, and job ads for cooks sit on the same page as household placement. If the brief is a full-time chef for one family, you want a private chef placement, not a personal-chef marketplace.
That instinct is sound on the food. The job inside a home is not the pass. We wrote the honest version here: should you hire a chef from your favourite restaurant?
A plated dinner for twelve is catering. A week on a boat with the existing crew is a different brief entirely, covered on our yacht chef page. If you need one night, hire for one night. If you need the house to run, hire staff.
A common request we hear is a family telling us they are open to a full-time chef eventually, but they would like to start with two or three days a week and see how it goes. That is a completely reasonable instinct. It usually also reveals a misunderstanding about what a private chef actually does in the hours they are not standing at the stove.
A private chef keeps the kitchen organised and clean, the pantry stocked and rotated on a first-in, first-out basis, and the fridge cleared of anything that has passed its date before anyone in the family notices. They know how your household likes its produce bought, organic or not, ripe or firm, and they know the small details that make a kitchen feel properly looked after: avocados left on the counter because you like them at room temperature in the morning, tomatoes that never go anywhere near the fridge. None of that happens on its own, and none of it pauses just because the chef only worked two days that week.
Good private chefs plan for the hours they are not in the house. That can mean healthy snacks prepared in advance, or simply the batter for a waffle, or a batch of cookie dough left in the fridge or freezer, so your children can bake it themselves the afternoon they get home from school and fill the house with the smell of something being made. It can mean fresh fruit portioned and frozen so a weekend smoothie comes out at exactly the calories or macros you track, or a week of juices planned in rotation: a green juice one day, carrot and orange the next, something spicier with turmeric and chilli after that. That kind of planning takes real time inside the household, most of it invisible, none of it captured by counting the days someone is physically cooking.
This is really the difference. A private chef controls the entire food environment of the household, not just the meals they personally prepare. If you want to eat cleanly, the chef makes sure nothing else finds its way into the kitchen. If you want your favourite chocolate or a particular snack brand always on hand, the chef keeps it stocked, because the job is serving the household's actual preferences, not enforcing a philosophy. A two or three day arrangement can work well, and it is a completely legitimate way to start. Just understand it for what it is: closer to a personal chef's schedule than a private chef's full role, and set expectations accordingly for what gets managed on the days no one is cooking.
The property is used in bursts. There is no house manager yet. The family still eats out most nights. Treat it as a defined service, with dates and a day rate, not as a trial for a job you have not scoped.
Someone in the house needs a real programme: children, ageing parents, a health protocol, frequent guests, or more than one residence. Discretion has become a requirement, not a preference.
Before anyone joins the household, run a trial day in the actual kitchen. How to price it, brief it, and judge it fairly: our private chef trial guide covers the full 24-step process.
Montclair Chef is a private chef agency built around one placement only: full-time, personally vetted private chefs for UHNW families. We do not run personal-chef rotas and we do not send cooks to dinner-party apps. This is the one thing the agency does.
Every chef goes through full employment-history review and direct reference verification with previous UHNW households when possible. All candidates can sign an NDA before any introduction. Most of the chefs we place are Michelin-trained. A curated shortlist arrives within 14 days, trial days happen in your own kitchen before any commitment, and Executive placements carry an up to 6-month replacement guarantee.
Our founder, Chris Demaillet, spent 25 years as a chef, 19 of them as a private chef to billionaires, before founding Montclair Chef. He takes the first call on every search. Read Private Chef to Billionaires: Inside UHNW Service.
No. A private chef's only client is your household. A personal chef's week is split across several clients. Same knives, same training, a genuinely different job.
You can, but be clear about what that arrangement actually is. On two or three days, a chef mostly cooks. On a full-time schedule, a chef also runs the pantry, rotates cold storage, keeps fresh produce stocked to your preferences, and prepares things to see the household through the days they are not there. A part-time schedule is closer to a personal-chef arrangement, and it works well, as long as you are not expecting full household food management on a two-day booking.
Sometimes, if they drop every other client and the household can employ them properly. Most cannot, because the other clients are how they currently make a living.
If the cooking is breakfast and a simple supper, maybe not. If the house needs a dining programme, menus that change with guests, and real service, that is a chef's seat.
The principal, or the estate or house manager working from a clear brief. Family offices usually own the search and the contract; we run those searches from our family offices page.
Yes, when the role is structured that way from the start. A private chef can prepare separate meals for adults, children, and staff, adjusting daily for allergies and last-minute guests.
A personal chef is a service invoice plus groceries. A private chef is a full-time compensation package plus the household food budget. Our private chef placement includes salary guidance for your exact market; use the compensation calculator for real figures.
Discretion, consistency, and a chef who understands the household over years rather than weeks. Our founder wrote the fuller account of this from inside the role, in Private Chef to Billionaires.

If the house needs an exclusive chef, we will tell you on the first call. If a personal chef is genuinely enough, we will say that too. We do not place that model, and we will not stretch a private-chef search to win a brief that is not one. Speak to a private chef specialist directly.
